Rose quartz is a fairly common variety of quartz. The shading of rose quartz varies from pink tinged white to deep nearly red pink. The colour of rose quartz is determined by small amounts of titanium and manganese being present in the silicon dioxide crystals.
Rose quartz is a popular stone in contemporary costume or fashion jewellery. Used as strings of beads on necklaces and bracelets rose quartz is often left uncut and lightly polished. Fine rose quartz crystals are sometimes cut as stones for rings or broaches. Sometimes when cut as cabochons (flat bottom rounded top) rose quartz displays a six-rayed star. This is caused by the inclusion of rutile (titanium dioxide) needles within the rose quartz crystal. As well as being used for beads for necklaces and bracelets larger pieces of rose quartz are used to make ornamental pieces such as bowls and vases e.t.c. The Chinese being particular masters at ornamental gem stone work sometimes use rose quartz to work with.
The popularity of rose quartz necklaces and bracelets may in part be due to the association of rose quartz with the zodiac sign Taurus (paler species of cornelian are also associated with Taurus). Rose quartz is also the birth stone or stone of the month for January.
